The following pictures are of the construction of a Paradox-3 speaker kit from GR-Research
Yipee, I finally finished my speakers. They are a GR-Research Paradox-3 kit. Below are a couple of pictures. (All walls are parallel despite what the picture looks like) The first few tracks I listened to were a wide variety of jazz, R&B, vocal, and rock on CD and vinyl including Cannonball Adderlly, Karrin Allyson, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nickle Creek, Live and Bush. All I can say at this point is I'm tickled. A couple of points on construction: material is pre-veneered cherry MDF with walnut corners and a walnut base. I included the Sonicap upgrade and used Black Hole 5 damping. It was my intention to wire for bi-wiring/amping, but somehow I got so anxious to complete them, I wired them normally per the plans. Oh well, I'll get around to this latter.
I really want to extend an extra thanks to Danny at GR for his patience in answering all my questions along the way.

First cuts
Here the pre-veneered cherry MDF has been all cut to size. Also, the piece of walnut I used for all the corners and the base. |
Baffle Template
I used a Jasper circle cutter to make templates for all the cut-outs and counter-sinks on the baffle and rear face of the speaker. I thought this would reduce the likelyhood of making a mistake. Luckily it did, since there was no scrap MDF if I had to re-cut any panels! |

Routing the Holes
I attached each template to the appropriate panel and used a loaner router table for all the cut-outs. |
Finished Baffles
I was really happy with how all the cutouts worked out. I did the countersinks the same way, but used a handheld router with a template bit.

Glueing Things Up
I cut the walnut slightly oversize and glued up one corner at a time using biscuts for alignment. You can also see the braces which were built using the same routing methods as the baffles. "Wow, honey, these are alot bigger than they looked on paper."

All Glued Up
The speaker on the right has the 3/4" roundovers cut on all the corners. You may be able to makeout the 1/16" of extra stock on all the corners which assured everything cleaned up.

Nearly Finished
The oil-varnish has been applied, crossovers, tweeters, cups and BlackHole 5 damping installed. It was my intention to wire for bi-wiring/amping, but somehow I got so anxious to complete them, I wired them normally per the plans. Oh well, I'll get around to this latter. |
